Description
Le poids des mots / Between hands is an artist book exploring the idea of what constitutes a book. It’s first four “pages” are paper casts of the artist’s torso. The fourth page incorporates a paper cast of the artist’s hands, and the fifth page is just a cast of the artist’s hands. The pages are set on a painted board with two pieces of cheese cloth attached to each side, which can be tied over the book to secure it.
Images and texts are printed on the “pages” using lithography. Certain imagery can be found repeated on several pages: a pair of folded hands taken from a reproduction of the Mona Lisa, and a photo of a plaster sculpture of a girl that the artist received as a gift when she was a child. We also see two family photos showing the artist’s cousin and grandmother. One set of 3-D moulded hands seem to be wrapped around the rib cage, the other is in a folded position.
The texts used in the work, in both French and English, are written by the artist.

Le poids des mots / Between hands est un livre d’artiste qui explore l’idée de ce qui constitue un livre. Les quatre premières « pages » sont des moulages en papier du torse de l’artiste. La quatrième page comprend un moulage en papier des mains de l’artiste, et la cinquième page n’est qu’un moulage des mains de l’artiste. Les pages sont placées sur une planche peinte avec deux morceaux de toile à fromage attachés de chaque côté, qui peuvent être noués sur le livre pour le fixer.
Les images et les textes sont imprimés sur les « pages » par lithographie. Certaines images se répètent sur plusieurs pages : une paire de mains croisées provenant d’une reproduction de la Joconde, et la photo d’une sculpture en plâtre d’une fillette que l’artiste avait reçue en cadeau lorsqu’elle était enfant. Nous voyons également deux photos de famille montrant la cousine et la grand-mère de l’artiste. Une paire de mains moulées en 3D semble être enroulée autour de la cage thoracique, l’autre est en position repliée.
Les textes utilisés dans l’œuvre, en français et en anglais, sont écrits par l’artiste.
Statement
The title Le poids des mots / Between hands was inspired by the writings of Virginia Woolf, thinking about words and the weight of words. The texts and imagery in the work reflect on how women have been silenced.
Le poids des mots / Between hands was the first work in which I was thinking about the materiality and the impact of words, a theme that continued to be present in many of my subsequent works.
Le titre Le poids des mots / Between hands a été inspiré par les écrits de Virginia Woolf, en pensant aux mots et à leur poids. Les textes et les images de l’œuvre reflètent la façon dont les femmes ont été réduites au silence.
Le poids des mots / Between hands est la première œuvre dans laquelle l’artiste réfléchit à la matérialité et à l’effet des mots, un thème qui reste présent dans de nombreuses œuvres ultérieures.
