Painting with Pastels / Peindre avec des pastels is a short video that begins showing a hand turning a vintage meat grinder attached to an old two-by-four. The action takes place on the rocks of the shoreline of the East River in Dumbo, Brooklyn, looking across to Manhattan. Pastels are placed in the grinder creating a pile of coloured dust on the rock. At one point, the grinder is removed and the pastels are ground into dust directly on the rock using a round stone. The sound of the city is heard in the background. The video images are punctuated with text screens reading:

In my first year of art school, I thought all artists were painters.
I imagined painting blue skies, white clouds and green fields.
Recently, I found five unopened boxes of pastel crayons in my studio.
I remember buying them on my first visit to New York ages ago.
There’s one box of green, three boxes of different blues and one box of white.
Nothing happened as imagined.

Painting with Pastels / Peindre avec des pastels est une courte vidéo qui commence par montrer une main en train de tourner un hachoir à viande rétro fixé à un vieux deux-par-quatre. L’action se déroule sur les rochers de la rive de l’East River à Dumbo, Brooklyn, en regardant de l’autre côté de Manhattan. Les pastels sont placés dans le broyeur, ce qui crée un tas de poussière colorée sur la pierre. À un moment donné, le broyeur est retiré et les pastels sont réduits en poussière directement sur la roche à l’aide d’une pierre ronde. On entend le bruit de la ville en arrière-plan. Les images vidéo sont ponctuées d’écrans de texte :

Dans ma première année en arts visuels, j’ai pensé que tous les artistes étaient des peintres. J’imaginais peindre les ciels bleus, les nuages blancs et les champs verts. Dernièrement, j’ai trouvé dans mon atelier cinq boites de crayons pastels jamais ouvertes. Je me souviens de les avoir achetées lors de ma première visite à New York il y a longtemps. Il y a une boite de vert, trois boites de bleu différentes et une boite de blanc. Rien s’est passé comme imaginé.
