Description

The Shadow of the Earth / L’ombre de la terre is composed of 36 small, brick-shaped, pieces of pigmented, handmade paper pinned vertically to the wall.

Statement

The work is a representation of a natural phenomenon, also known as the ‘umbra’. When the sky is clear, it is visible briefly morning and evening, to the west just before sunrise and to the east just after sunset. The sun casts a shadow of the Earth as a dark blue/grey band onto the atmosphere above the horizon and is often topped with pink and yellow layers of colour reaching into the blue of the sky.

The work I am proposing is in fact ‘un éclat’ or fragment of a much larger work of the same name. It was created this past summer as an ephemeral installation for a group exhibition about the neighbourhood. Each brick of the façade of a small studio building was covered with a shaped, thin sheet of pigmented, handmade paper. (see image included) To my surprise, the work continues to survive in spite of the harsh winter conditions of Montreal.
